SANDIA SUN

Sandía Sun — developed with Red Ant Collective and printed by Risolana Studio — documents the history and resistance to gentrification of Barelas, one of Albuquerque’s oldest Chicano neighborhoods.

For Sandía Sun, I conducted and edited interviews with Barelas community members. I also directed the photography, by taking photos of community members and local businesses, and sourcing archival images from The University of New Mexico’s Center for Southwest Research's (CSWR) inventories. This work was done in collaboration with others from Red Ant Collective, a local Albuquerque community organization.

Red Ant Collective spent 2024 facilitating books clubs, working groups and teach-ins on the history of Albuquerque and the ways people can help contribute to the development of the city in postive ways. Sandía Sun was one of the culimations of these efforts. The independently-published pamphlet highlights community members who orate the story of their neighborhood and imagine how they could continue to live there, despite ongoing displacement.
